Film Review

Herb and Dorothy

Hey collectors: Fascinating documentary just out on Herbert and Dorothy Vogel, NYC collectors who bought cutting edge art in the 1960's from many then obscure, now important artists. They assembled a huge collection, on very modest salaries (he worked in the post office, she a librarian), that completely filled their small NYC apartment. DONATED the collection to the National Gallery. Wonderful interviews with them, many famous artists (Chuck Close, Sol LeWitt, etc), curators, and art historians. And conversations with them in their apartment, with their cats who clearly have the run of everything (as it should be). Endearing but intelligent. Says much about the passion of collecting, which set them far apart and above most Collectors (with a capital c). And fascinating look at the NY art world in the 60's. Great film (short, only 90 minutes) that speaks to all real collectors. I couldn't connect with most of their art, but loved them and their passion. Definitely worth seeing! Screening at the Lumiere.
