My 20 Best Films for 2007

My 20 best films for 2007, excluding documentaries, in no particular order except the first two, which were easily the best of the year:

  • The Lives of Others (Germany)
  • The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (France)
  • No Country for Old Men (US)
  • Zodiac (US)
  • Indigenes [Days of Glory] (France)
  • Jindabyne (Australia)
  • Red Road (England)
  • Away from Her (Canada)
  • Lady Chatterley (France)
  • Rescue Dawn (US)
  • This is England (England)
  • Into the Wild (US)
  • Before the Devil Knows you're Dead (US)
  • Starting out in the Evening (US)
  • La Vie en Rose (France)
  • Gone Baby Gone (US)
  • After the Wedding (Denmark)
  • In the Valley of Elah (US)
  • Private Fears in Public Places (France)
  • Atonement (England)
  • Documentaries:
  • Deliver us from Evil (US)
  • Manufactured Landscapes (Canada)
  • Terror's Advocate (France)
  • Primo Levi's Journey (Italy)
  • Deep Water (England)
  • No End in Sight (US)
  • Sicko (US)
  • The Rape of Europa (US)

Note that some of these films actually opened toward the end of 2006 but didn't screen in SF until January, 2007. Also several highly rated films that have opened in NY/LA will not open here until January, such as There will be Blood, Persepolis, The Band's Visit, and 4 Months 3 Weeks 2 Days. Many of my 20 best are still playing on the big screen so it's great time to see them. We are so fortunate to be living in the Bay Area with so many screens dedicated to foreign and indy films. Here's to a great New Year, filled with more wonderful films on the big screen.
